State Education Teams, or SETs, bring educators and selected industry partners together to support the quality, consistency, and long-term sustainability of SkillsUSA Tennessee College/Postsecondary competitions.

SET members provide subject-matter expertise, help connect competitions to Tennessee program competencies and workforce expectations, and support alignment with SkillsUSA national standards.

SET members advise and support. Technical Chairs remain responsible for contest operations and final decisions.

  • Serves as the official contest decision-maker.
  • Maintains contest integrity and accountability.

State Education Team participation does not provide access to confidential competition information. All contributions are made from a standards-based, non-confidential perspective.

SET Members Do Not Receive or Review: Secure Contest Projects Scoring Keys Confidential Judging Materials Restricted Competitor Information Insider Information That Could Create an Unfair Advantage

Who Can Serve?

Educators and Experts With Relevant Knowledge

State Education Teams are designed primarily for educators with experience in the related program or contest area. Industry professionals and other subject-matter experts may also participate when appropriate.

Faculty and Instructors

Educators with program knowledge, technical expertise, and an understanding of student learning.

Program Leaders

Department chairs, coordinators, and education leaders connected to relevant program areas.

Industry Experts

Professionals who contribute current workplace knowledge and technical perspectives.

Former Technical Chairs

Experienced volunteers who provide continuity, historical knowledge, and mentoring.

Team Structure

Flexible Teams Based on Contest Needs

One SET may support a single contest or a cluster of related contests. Teams are composed primarily of educators, with industry participation as appropriate. Recommended team size is approximately three to eight members per contest area. Members serve for one program year and may volunteer again. Participation is voluntary and based on availability and program needs.

The level of involvement may vary by contest area and current needs.

What SET Members Do Not Do

Clear Boundaries Protect Accountability

Do not manage or run contests unless separately appointed. Do not override Technical Chairs. Do not make final contest decisions. Do not receive confidential contest materials. Membership does not guarantee appointment as a chair, judge, or volunteer.
